A donation ceremony for humanitarian supplies from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held under clear skies on Saturday, May 16 at Kobe Central Catholic Church. This donation was made possible through the involvement of local Latter-day Saint members in the weekly “Soup & Kitchen” volunteer program hosted by Kobe Central Catholic Church. Through ongoing service, a need was identified for folding tables and tarp tents to support and expand the activity. In response, the Church’s Welfare and Self-Reliance Services formally provided these items.

A Bond That Began with Prayer and Small Acts of Service

The bridge for this exchange was built by a local Latter-day Saint couple, Maribeth Macaspac Sumang and Renato Guina Jr. Sumang. Through a former colleague and Catholic friend, they learned about the soup kitchen and began participating as volunteers several years ago, motivated by a desire to show Christlike love and serve others in their community. Reflecting on their experience, Sister Sumang shared:

“What began as a small act of service has become a great blessing for our family. Working side by side for a good cause has taught us how much joy and purpose it brings. As we continued volunteering, we came to feel strongly that improvements to the facilities were needed to better serve those who depend on the soup kitchen. That feeling led to this donation, and we are deeply grateful for the Church’s support in helping fulfill that desire.”

Beyond Denominations — United as Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Sister Sumang also spoke about the special bond formed with members of the Catholic Church:

“As we served together, we began to see one another, beyond differences in denomination, as ‘brothers and sisters in Christ.’ Through daily conversations, laughter, and shared moments of gratitude, we felt mutual respect and trust deepen. We share a strong desire to follow the Savior and care for those around us. In that shared purpose, we’ve discovered how much we have in common, and we’ve built a wonderful sense of understanding and friendship.”

A Warm Ceremony Filled with Smiles

The presentation ceremony on May 16 was attended by the Sumang couple, who have long supported the initiative, Welfare and Self-Reliance Services humanitarian specialist Mr. Ochiai, and local Church leaders (Stake President Oshima, Bishop Sato, National Communication Assistant Director Mizuno, and Kobe Stake Communication Assistant Director Kōchiyama). Under the pleasant May sky, the donation was presented in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Participants from both churches renewed their commitment to continue serving the community and extending love together.

By joining hands across denominational boundaries and continuing community-based service rooted in Christlike love, participants expressed their hope to gradually build “bridges of trust through love, kindness, and compassion,” expanding the work of Jesus Christ.
