A fire at Dugan Khad Resort on May 17 has created unexpected challenges for an upcoming For the Strength of Youth (FSY) conference in Mongolia, where hundreds of youth and leaders are scheduled to gather at the end of June.
The fire destroyed three buildings and damaged a fourth, including approximately one-third of the resort’s lodging, as well as its kitchen and main dining facility. While no injuries were reported, the damage has required careful consideration as organizers determine how best to proceed.

The resort had been selected after months of preparation led by Brother Adiyabold and Sister Tuul, who were called last summer to serve as FSY directors. Working with a committee, they searched extensively for a location that could accommodate approximately 500 participants. After visiting many sites, Dugan Khad Resort stood out as the only location that met all requirements, and a contract was finalized earlier this year.
When news of the fire came, Brother Adiyabold and Sister Tuul immediately sought direction from the Area Presidency. Three options were presented: postpone the event, relocate to a new venue, or move forward at the current location despite the damage. With faith and determination, efforts have focused on making the original location work.
Resort owner Tsetseg shared that the fire is believed to have started in the restaurant and spread quickly due to strong winds. “Because we are located far from the city, it took the fire department two and a half hours to arrive,” she explained. “During that time, we worked hard to protect our employees and prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding forest. We are very grateful the forest was preserved.”
In the days that followed, young single adults (YSA) from Ulaanbaatar united in service. Volunteers traveled to the resort to assist with cleanup, clearing debris and helping restore damaged buildings by cleaning soot from walls and furniture.

“Helping others is the right thing to do, and it feels good,” said Arjuna, a YSA who participated in the effort. Another volunteer, Huvituguldur, shared, “I love to serve. Whenever there is an opportunity, I take it. Serving is a phenomenal experience.”
Recovery efforts are already well underway. Debris has been cleared, and repairs have begun. To help offset lost capacity, the resort is acquiring large tents and expects to accommodate the planned number of participants.
“Our schedule was full from late May through July,” Tsetseg said. “Some groups have canceled, but many have chosen to stay. We are working hard to rebuild and continue serving our guests.”
Despite the challenges, faith, cooperation, and a spirit of service continue to guide preparations. FSY organizers remain hopeful that the conference will move forward and provide a meaningful and uplifting experience for all who attend.
