On May 24, 2026, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and distinguished guests gathered in Seoul to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gapyeong, often remembered as the “Miracle of Gapyeong,” during the Korean War.
The devotional brought together Korean members of the Church, U.S. and Korean military representatives, civic leaders, historians, and family members of veterans who fought in the historic 1951 battle. The meeting honored the faith, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the soldiers who helped preserve freedom on the Korean peninsula.
DOWNLOADA Gathering to Remember Faith and Freedom
Opening the devotional, organizers emphasized that the event was held to remember those who “gave their lives for the freedom of Korea” and to ensure that their sacrifice continues to inspire future generations. Attendees included surviving veterans, descendants of service members, and officials from both Korea and the United States, highlighting the lasting bonds forged during the war.
Among those recognized were family members of Lt. Col. Raymond B. Dalley, commander of the U.S. Army’s 213th Field Artillery Battalion (now the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery Regiment), whose leadership during the battle became central to what many call a miracle. Also in attendance was 95-year-old Korean War veteran Frank Sweeting, who returned to Korea for the first time in 75 years.
Leaders noted that the gathering itself was a “miracle,” as it reunited individuals and families connected to a battle that continues to shape both nations’ history.

Personal Accounts Testify of Miracles
Speakers shared deeply personal reflections on the events of the battle and the faith that sustained soldiers in the midst of overwhelming odds.
Colby Frank Dalley, grandson of Lt. Col. Dalley, spoke of his grandfather’s humility and devotion. “He never considered himself a hero,” Dalley said, describing a man who dedicated his life to service and quietly exemplified faith. He testified that miracles are given by God “to preserve our agency and strengthen our faith,” citing scriptural assurances that the Lord fights for His people.
Frank Sweeting offered a moving firsthand account of the battle and its aftermath. He recalled arriving in Korea at age 19 and witnessing profound suffering, including hungry children and displaced families. “The gospel is not only within church walls,” he said. “It is caring for those who suffer and sacrificing for the freedom of others.”
He described the Battle of Gapyeong as a moment when faith and unity led to extraordinary protection. Despite facing overwhelming enemy forces—estimated at 70 to 1—his battalion suffered no fatalities during the engagement. “When asked how many had died, the answer was, ‘None.’ The response was simple: ‘That’s a miracle,’” Sweeting recalled.
He attributed this outcome to faith, prayer, and the inspired leadership of Lt. Col. Dalley, who prayed daily for his soldiers and sought divine guidance in every decision. “He cared for us like sons,” Sweeting said. “That is what true leadership looks like.”
Faith, Leadership, and the Meaning of the Miracle
Several speakers emphasized that the “miracle” of Gapyeong extended beyond the battlefield. It was reflected in the unity of the soldiers, their mutual sacrifice, and their reliance on God.
Professor Mark Peterson, a historian who has studied the battle extensively, highlighted Lt. Col. Dalley’s leadership as a key factor. He explained that the commander’s consistent prayer and spiritual sensitivity influenced critical decisions that preserved lives, reinforcing the belief that divine guidance played a role in the outcome.
Mayor Steve Nelson of Cedar City, Utah—home to many soldiers who fought in the battle—connected the events at Gapyeong to scriptural teachings about agency, freedom, and obedience to God. He taught that true “prosperity” includes spiritual strength, especially during hardship, and that God strengthens His people rather than always removing difficulty.
Professor Oh Jung-hun, who has worked closely with Korean War veterans in the United States, reflected on how their courage continues to inspire others. He shared that their example of faith, endurance, and sacrifice has helped him and many others overcome personal trials. “If they could endure and create miracles under such conditions,” he said, “then we too can find strength in our own lives.”

A Lasting Legacy of Faith and Unity
Former Seoul Korea Mission President Brett Taylor recounted efforts to preserve and share the story of Gapyeong through articles, videos, and ongoing film projects. He noted that many in Korea were previously unaware of the battle’s significance and expressed a commitment to ensuring that its lessons are remembered worldwide.
Church leader Elder Woo-Chul Lee concluded the devotional by emphasizing that miracles did not cease with the Korean War. Drawing on scriptures, he encouraged attendees to exercise faith, diligence, and spiritual attentiveness—likening this guidance to a “Liahona” that helps individuals navigate life’s challenges.
“Just as those young soldiers trusted in God amid overwhelming circumstances,” he said, “we too can experience miracles in our own lives as we turn to Him.”
Remembering Sacrifice, Inspiring the Future
As the meeting concluded, participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor the veterans and reflect on the blessings of freedom made possible through their sacrifice.
Speakers consistently emphasized that the prosperity seen in modern Korea stands as a testament to the faith, courage, and sacrifice of those who served. Attendees were invited to carry forward this legacy by living lives of service, faith, and gratitude.
The devotional served not only as a commemoration of a historic battle but also as a reminder that the principles demonstrated at Gapyeong—faith in God, unity, sacrifice, and love for others—continue to inspire and guide individuals today.
